Sri Lakashmi Chennakesava Swamy Temple

Sri Lakashmi Chennakesava Swamy Temple, Hindu temple in Macharla mandal, India

Sri Lakashmi Chennakesava Swamy Temple houses a black granite idol of Lord Vishnu adorned with a brass Prabhavali decoration encircling it. The structure features a mandapam with intricate stone carvings that showcase the architectural style of the period.

Construction began in 1042 during the reign of Sri Thrailokya Malla Someswarudu under the Chalukya dynasty based in Kalyani. The temple emerged from a period of significant religious and artistic activity in the southern Deccan region.

Twenty ancient pillars encircle the outer sanctum, their presence creating a defined sacred space. Carved elephants in different poses decorate the pillars throughout, reflecting the skill of artisans who worked on the temple.

The temple maintains dress codes that visitors should follow - men typically wear traditional dhoti or trousers, and women wear sarees or similar traditional garments. Understanding these expectations helps you prepare appropriately before entering.

The main deity features Lord Vishnu with a distinctive moustache, holding a Chakra in the left hand and Shankham in the right. This uncommon portrayal sets it apart from typical depictions of the god found elsewhere.
