Chavundaraya Basadi, Jain temple at Chandragiri Hill, Shravanabelagola, India.
Chavundaraya Basadi is a two-story Jain temple on Chandragiri Hill built entirely from fine-grained granite stone. The structure contains a main sanctum, columned halls, porches, and verandahs that open to the surrounding space in a careful arrangement.
Construction began in 982 CE under Ganga King Marasimha II's rule and was completed around 995 CE under Jinadeva's direction.
The temple displays sculptures and reliefs from the Hoysala period, particularly visible in the carved details of the inner halls and porches. The craftwork shows how local artisans expressed their skill through stone decoration during this era.
Reaching the temple requires climbing approximately 500 steps up the hillside. The site is open daily from sunrise to sunset and can be visited during religious ceremonies or at other times for sightseeing.
In the 10th century, Jain scholar Nemichandra composed the philosophical text Gommatasara within the temple walls. This literary connection earned the site recognition as a Sruta-tirtha, a shrine of knowledge.
