Gangtok district

Gangtok district is a mountainous administrative area in Sikkim featuring rugged terrain, numerous valleys, forests, and rivers throughout its landscape. The topography is characterized by steep slopes and dense vegetation that cover the entire area.

The area became a separate administrative district in 2021 following a reorganization of the former East Sikkim. This restructuring gave the region a new administrative identity and organizational structure.

The district is home to several ethnic communities, including Nepali, Bhutia, and Lepcha groups, who continue their traditional festivals and customs in daily life. These different cultures shape the appearance and character of local villages and markets.

Certain areas near the international border require permits that should be obtained in advance. National Highway 10 serves as the main road connection linking important places throughout the district.

The area contains two strategic mountain passes, Nathula and Jelepla, that have connected this Himalayan region with Tibet for centuries. These passages were once important trading corridors and continue to shape the region's story today.
