Temple of Anahita at Kangavar
Temple of Anahita at Kangavar, Ancient temple ruins in Kangavar, Iran.
The Temple of Anahita at Kangavar is an ancient ruin featuring a massive stone platform with two lateral staircases that ascend to an upper level. The structure combines large stone blocks with Ionic columns, displaying a blend of architectural traditions.
The sanctuary was built during the Parthian Empire between 247 BC and 224 AD and later modified during the Sassanid period until 651 AD. These changes reflect the religious and political shifts between these two empires.
The site was dedicated to the worship of Anahita, a Persian goddess associated with water and fertility. Visitors can still observe how this religious practice shaped the design and physical remains of the sanctuary.
The site is located in the Kangavar area of Kermanshah Province and is accessible to visitors interested in archaeological remains. Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and exposed stone structures.
The foundations contain megalithic stones similar to those from Achaemenid times, suggesting ancient building techniques were reused. At the same time, Ionic columns clearly show Greek architectural influence on Persian construction traditions.
