Kabud Gonbad Mosque

Kabud Gonbad Mosque, Mosque in Kalat County, Iran.

Description

Kabud Gonbad Mosque is a house of worship in Kalat County featuring four large prayer niches and a distinctive blue dome decorated with yellow patterns. The structure rests on an octagonal base and is built from brick, mortar, and decorative tiles, with a rectangular courtyard at its center.

History

Construction began during the Seljuk period in the 12th century and the building was expanded significantly later. Major reconstruction took place in 1747, with further renovations commissioned in 1835.

Culture

The mosque displays architectural elements from Seljuk, Afsharid, and Qajar periods, representing three different eras of Persian building tradition. These layers are visible in the brickwork, decorations, and layout, showing how different cultures shaped this place over time.

Practical

The central courtyard provides an open space to walk through and explore the surrounding structures and decorative details. The octagonal dome arrangement creates an interesting spatial layout that separates and connects the different areas within the structure.

A tomb from the Ilkhanid period for the Mongol Jalairs family stands beside the eastern prayer hall. This burial connects the site to multiple historical dynasties and reveals the place's strategic importance across different eras.
