Heracles statue

The limestone statue depicts Heracles in a reclining position, measuring 147 centimeters, with a bowl in his left hand and his right hand resting on his leg.

Created in 148 BCE during the Seleucid period, the statue was dedicated by Hyakinthos to honor Kleomenes, the Commander of the Upper Satrapies in ancient Persia.

The statue combines Greek and Persian artistic elements, featuring Heracles with a bow similar to those shown in ancient Behistun inscriptions rather than traditional Greek imagery.

The current head on display is a replica, as the original is preserved by the Cultural Heritage Organization to prevent theft and ensure its protection.

This sculpture remains the only surviving rock carving from the period of Seleucid control over the Iranian Plateau, spanning from 312 BCE to 140 BCE.
