Westfjords, Peninsula in northwestern Iceland.

The Westfjords is a peninsula in northwestern Iceland with deep fjords, steep mountains, and narrow valleys that form a natural maze pattern along the coastline. The region extends into the North Atlantic with numerous sea inlets that cut deep into the land.

The region was settled by Vikings in the 9th century and maintained traditional fishing practices and isolated communities until the 20th century. Accessibility remained limited by the mountainous terrain, which allowed stable local cultures to develop over time.

The Museum of Icelandic Sorcery in Holmavik presents artifacts and documents about the practice of magic in medieval Iceland through local exhibitions.

During winter months, snow closes many mountain roads, making Isafjordur Airport the main way to reach the region. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and keep flexible travel plans.

Raudasandur Beach stretches for several kilometers with sand that shifts between golden and reddish tones depending on sunlight and weather. This color change comes from different mineral compositions in the sand grains.
