Northeast, Electoral constituency in northern Iceland
The Northeast is an electoral constituency covering northern and eastern Iceland, including municipalities like Akureyri and Fjarðabyggð. The territory stretches across sparsely populated regions where settlements are spread over vast distances.
The constituency was formed in 2000 when former Northern and Eastern districts merged into a single region. Elections in this configuration began in 2003.
The district maintains strong democratic participation, with over 45,000 registered voters participating in regular parliamentary elections to select their representatives.
The region holds 10 parliamentary seats with additional equalization seats allocated by national election results. Visitors can contact local municipal offices for information about election procedures and representative contacts.
The sparse population distribution gives voters here greater influence in national parliament than those in densely populated areas. This system reflects Iceland's effort to represent all regions fairly regardless of population size.
