Þórufoss

Þórufoss, Waterfall on Laxá í Kjós river, Iceland

Þórufoss is a waterfall on the Laxá í Kjós river in southern Iceland, where water drops roughly 18 meters over rounded rock formations. The cascade flows east of Lake Þingvallavatn and creates a powerful flow that settles into a deep pool below.

The area around this waterfall shows evidence of ancient Norse settlements that inhabited this landscape for centuries. The old structures and remains tell of early Icelandic communities that established themselves in this region.

The name refers to Thor, the Norse god of thunder, reflecting the region's deep connection to ancient Scandinavian beliefs. Visitors can sense this mythological link simply by being present in the landscape.

You can reach this waterfall by taking Route 36 from Mossfellsbær, then turning onto Route 48 until you reach the marked parking area. The walk from the parking area to the waterfall edge is short and follows relatively easy terrain, though Icelandic weather can change rapidly.

During winter months, the entire waterfall transforms into a frozen structure as flowing water turns to ice. This seasonal change creates a completely different landscape that reveals the power of Icelandic cold.

Beautiful small waterfall. Take the time to go down to the foot of the cascade; the path is short and easy to access.
