Sanremo, Resort city on the Riviera dei Fiori, Italy
Sanremo is a city on the Ligurian coast in the Province of Imperia, around 20 kilometers from the French border. The old town center La Pigna sits on a hill above the harbor, while the newer districts extend along the coastal road to the east and west.
The town grew during the Middle Ages around a castle that stood on the hill above the coast. In the 19th century it developed into a popular winter resort for European nobles and wealthy travelers seeking the mild climate.
Flower markets display carnations and ranunculus from surrounding greenhouses daily, as the region maintains a long tradition of cut flower cultivation. Along the promenade stand Art Nouveau villas built in the late 19th century for winter visitors from across Europe.
The train station sits close to the harbor and connects the town with Genoa to the east and the French Côte d'Azur to the west. A walk along the seafront promenade is easy, while the steep alleys of La Pigna require sturdy shoes.
The municipal casino is one of the oldest in Europe and opened in 1905 in a palace-like building by the sea. The establishment attracted many famous guests and later served as inspiration for Ian Fleming's Casino Royale.
