Madonna della Costa, Baroque shrine in Sanremo, Italy
Madonna della Costa is a baroque sanctuary standing at the highest point of Sanremo, built with a Latin cross layout and topped by a dome. The interior features painted frescoes and the space is arranged for prayer and contemplation.
The sanctuary was built in 1630 following a sailor's miraculous rescue and replaced an earlier chapel dating to 1361. The distinctive dome was added later, between 1770 and 1775, completing the structure.
The sanctuary is named after the patron saint of Sanremo and draws visitors seeking intercession and spiritual comfort. The site has become a place where locals express gratitude through small offerings and prayer.
The sanctuary is reached by walking through the La Pigna district and following the narrow lanes that climb toward the hilltop. The terrain is sloped and footwear with good grip is helpful for navigating the steep pathways.
The dome has served as a reference point for sailors navigating the sea since its construction. Inside, the walls are covered with small votive objects left by people who experienced rescue or recovery.
