Mount Etna, Active stratovolcano in Sicily, Italy
Mount Etna rises to 3357 meters above sea level, making it the highest active volcano in Europe and a dominant feature of Sicily's eastern coast.
The volcano's first documented eruption dates back to 1500 BCE, when explosive activity forced the inhabitants of eastern Sicily to migrate toward the western regions.
The fertile volcanic soil around Mount Etna supports extensive agriculture, with local farmers cultivating vineyards, orchards, and pistachios on the mountain slopes.
Visitors can access the summit area through cable cars departing from Rifugio Sapienza, with winter months offering opportunities for skiing on the northern slopes.
The volcano's height increased by approximately 30 meters in 2021 due to accumulated material from multiple eruptions throughout the year.
