Castle of Baron Gamba, Museum of modern art in Châtillon, Italy.
The Castle of Baron Gamba is a museum of modern art housed in a fortified residence perched on a rocky hilltop in Châtillon. Inside, the rooms display contemporary artworks spanning more than a century, creating an unusual setting where visitors encounter paintings and sculptures within castle walls.
Construction of this residence began in 1902 under the direction of engineer Carlo Saroldi and took several years to complete. The building represented a significant architectural undertaking for the Aosta Valley during the early 1900s.
The museum exhibits 150 art pieces from the 19th century to present times, including works by Turner, Ashton, Delleani, and sculptures by Martini and Mastroianni.
The location on a hilltop means a short climb from town, with views opening up as you approach the entrance. Good footwear and a steady pace help make the ascent comfortable for most visitors.
The surrounding park holds mature trees including a giant redwood planted in the 1800s that still towers above the grounds. This unusual specimen for Europe offers a quiet natural counterpoint to the modern art displayed indoors.
