Lusiana, Italian comune
Lusiana is a village on the Asiago plateau in the province of Vicenza, sitting at around 2,460 feet (750 meters) above sea level. Its narrow streets are lined with stone and plaster houses, many with wooden shutters and plain gray facades.
Lusiana was its own municipality for a long time before joining with Conco in 2019 to form the new comune of Lusiana Conco. During the First World War, this part of the plateau sat close to the front line, and traces of that period can still be found in the surrounding landscape.
The district called Maino shares its name with the family of Sonia Maino Gandhi, who was born here. Walking through this small corner of the village today, there is little to signal the connection, just plain houses along narrow lanes.
The village is easy to reach from the main roads crossing the plateau and can be explored on foot without difficulty. The surrounding hillsides offer open paths through fields and forest that require no special preparation.
The bell tower holds a bronze bell cast in the late 1300s, making it one of the oldest in the Vicenza area. It rang out for events across the plateau for centuries before the village took its current administrative form.
