Ponte della Costituzione, Pedestrian bridge in Cannaregio, Italy
Ponte della Costituzione crosses the Grand Canal with a structure made of steel, glass, and Istrian stone that reaches ninety-four meters from bank to bank. Its arched profile rises about nine meters above the water, guiding pedestrians along a gentle curve.
Construction began in 2007 and the crossing opened to the public on September 11, 2008, becoming the fourth permanent bridge over the Grand Canal. The name honors the sixtieth anniversary of the Italian Constitution, adding a modern chapter to the city's long record of canal crossings.
Locals call it by different names, reflecting mixed feelings about this modern addition to the cityscape. Visitors cross a structure that sparked debate when it opened, though it now serves thousands of travelers daily between the railway station and the bus terminal.
The steps link Santa Lucia railway station with Piazzale Roma, offering a direct route for travelers on foot. Visitors should walk carefully, especially when the surface is wet, as the pavement can become slippery.
Officials replaced the glass sections with trachyte stone in 2022 after slipping incidents occurred in wet conditions. This change altered not only safety but also the original appearance of the walking surface.
