Minori, Campania, Town on the Amalfi Coast, Province of Salerno, Italy
Minori is a small town on the Amalfi Coast in the Province of Salerno, tucked between the sea and the hills of the Campania region. The town center opens directly onto a sandy beach, with narrow streets running inland past old buildings, churches, and small shops.
The first settlement was built on a hill called Forcella, chosen for its defensive position against outside threats. Over the Middle Ages, life moved down toward the coast as the community grew around the church dedicated to Santa Trofimena.
Minori calls itself the 'City of Taste,' a title it adopted in 2002 to honor its long cooking traditions. Shops along the main street sell handmade pasta and sweets made with the local Amalfi lemon, a protected variety recognizable by its long shape and strong scent.
Most of the main sights sit close to the beach and are easy to reach on foot from the town center. Parking in the center is limited, so leaving the car outside the village and walking in is a practical option.
A Roman villa from the 1st century lies buried beneath what is now the town center, hidden over centuries by sediment from a nearby stream. It was only discovered in 1932 after some houses collapsed, revealing walls and mosaic floors that had been underground for hundreds of years.
