San Giovanni del Toro, Medieval church in Ravello, Italy
San Giovanni del Toro is a church in Ravello featuring a slender bell tower in Arab-Sicilian style and a facade with three entrance portals. The interior is dominated by an ornate pulpit supported by columns and decorated with mosaic panels depicting biblical scenes and Syrian pottery fragments.
The church was consecrated in the 11th century and served as an important religious center for Ravello's community. Following earthquake damage in 1715, substantial repairs were undertaken, with comprehensive restoration work completed in the 1990s.
The church takes its name from Saint John, whose devotion was deeply rooted in this region during the Middle Ages. Inside, the pulpit displays intricate mosaics depicting biblical scenes that reflect the influence of Middle Eastern craftspeople and the maritime trading culture of the time.
Access to the interior is limited and must be requested through the office at Via San Giovanni del Toro 50, so it is important to inquire beforehand. The church sits directly on Piazzetta San Giovanni del Toro but is not always open for visits, so contacting staff on site beforehand is recommended.
The reading desk of the pulpit rests upon an eagle sculpture holding an open book that displays the opening line of the Gospel of John. This uncommon detail reveals how medieval artisans used symbolic designs to convey spiritual messages.
