Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, Medieval papal basilica in Assisi, Italy

The basilica combines two separate churches connected by a staircase, featuring Italian Gothic architecture with Romanesque elements and detailed stone carvings.

Construction began in 1228 under Pope Gregory IX to house Saint Francis's remains, with lead architects Elias of Cortona and Lapo Tedesco designing the structure.

The walls display extensive fresco cycles by medieval artists including Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini, illustrating biblical narratives and Saint Francis's life.

The basilica remains open daily from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with guided tours available in multiple languages and separate entrances for the upper and lower churches.

The crypt beneath the lower church contains Saint Francis's stone sarcophagus, discovered in 1818 after remaining hidden for centuries.
