Appian Way, Ancient road in Rome, Italy

The Appian Way stretches 430 miles from Rome to Brindisi, featuring large basalt stones that form a sturdy foundation for the original Roman road.

Constructed in 312 BC by Appius Claudius Caecus, this road facilitated Roman military expansion and served as a vital route for troops during the Samnite Wars.

The first ten miles contain numerous Roman tombs, monuments, and two major Christian catacombs that showcase early religious practices and burial traditions.

Visitors can access the road by Metro or bus from central Rome, with bicycle rentals available at the Appia Antica Service Center for exploring the area.

The road contains the longest straight section in Europe, extending 62 kilometers without any curves through the Italian landscape.
