Filettino, Mountain municipality in Lazio, Italy
Filettino is a mountain municipality in the province of Frosinone in Lazio, sitting at 1,063 meters above sea level roughly 70 kilometers east of Rome. The settlement is surrounded by mountains and is home to a small population of around 569 people.
The place emerged around 800 AD as a refuge from Saracen invasions, later coming under the control of the Caetani family. These early origins shaped its development as an isolated mountain settlement.
The village celebrates its patron saint, St. Bernardino of Siena, with traditional festivities each year on May 20. These gatherings bring the tight-knit community together and reflect the spiritual traditions that have shaped life here.
The village sits on a mountainside, so it is best explored on foot, with the winding road leading to the core of the settlement. While large tourist facilities are not available, basic services exist for visitors.
In 2011, the village declared itself an independent principality and issued its own currency in response to government plans to merge small municipalities. This unusual move displayed the residents' defiance against centralization efforts.
