Verucchio, Medieval commune in Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Verucchio is a medieval commune in the Province of Rimini in Emilia-Romagna, situated across hillsides with views over the Marecchia river valley and the Romagna coastline. The settlement divides into two main parts: the old fortified center perched on a hilltop and Villa Verucchio spread through the lower valley area.

The Malatesta family established their original stronghold here during the 13th century, constructing defenses against competing nobles from Urbino. These early fortifications shaped the settlement's character for many generations.

The Archaeological Museum displays objects from the Villanovan period that show how people lived in early times. These finds help visitors understand the long human history in this area before the medieval period.

The two residential areas are connected by local transportation services, making it easy to move between the hilltop and valley zones. If you plan to walk around, keep in mind that the old center sits on a slope, so be ready for some uphill sections.

The Franciscan convent holds a 13th-century crucifixion painting created by the Riminese school of art. The building also preserves a cypress tree with a local tradition connecting it to Saint Francis.
