San Martino di Castrozza, Mountain village in Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy
San Martino di Castrozza is a mountain village in Trentino Province situated at about 1,487 meters (4,879 feet) in a valley between the Pale di San Martino and Cima della Pala mountain ranges. The settlement provides access to ski slopes and hiking trails through the Dolomite mountain massif.
The village emerged as an Alpine center in the 19th century when Austrian and German climbers explored and ascended the limestone peaks of the region. Later development brought ski lifts and winter tourism, transforming the settlement into a well-known ski resort in the Dolomites.
The area has been linked to Alpine farming for centuries, and farms still produce cheese and cured meats using methods passed down through generations. Local shops in the village sell these products along with handcrafted wooden items and woven goods made in nearby communities.
The winter season provides access to slopes of all difficulty levels and runs from December through April, with most lifts and runs operating during peak months. In summer the area opens for hiking and mountain tours, some passing through nature reserves.
The Pale and Cima della Pala display a soft pink to orange glow in the morning and evening when sunlight strikes the limestone faces. This visual effect appears when the sun reflects off minerals in the rock.
