Pala di San Martino, Alpine summit in Dolomites, Italy
The Pala di San Martino is a mountain group in the eastern Dolomites reaching approximately 2,982 meters in elevation. It comprises a series of peaks, broad plateaus, and steep limestone walls that define its dramatic three-dimensional structure.
The rock formations originated approximately 260 million years ago from coral reefs in a tropical shallow sea. This ancient marine legacy forms the foundation of the entire mountain structure.
The name San Martino references Saint Martin and reflects the religious ties of local communities to this sacred geography. Today the mountain serves as a destination where hikers and climbers move through a landscape shaped by a century and a half of mountaineering tradition.
Access to this mountain group is easiest from San Martino di Castrozza, a village at its base offering accommodations and supplies. Late May through early October provides the best hiking window, while winter opens possibilities for skiing and snowshoeing on lower slopes.
The Altopiano delle Pale is a vast plateau at around 2,600 meters surrounded by towering peaks and bare limestone expanses. This otherworldly setting of exposed rock feels distinctly different from typical mountain scenery and creates an unusual hiking experience.
