Pala di San Martino, Alpine summit in Dolomites, Italy
The Pala di San Martino reaches 2,982 meters in elevation and forms part of the largest mountain group in the eastern Dolomites, spanning 240 square kilometers.
The mountain emerged from coral reefs that existed approximately 260 million years ago when the region was covered by a shallow tropical sea.
The mountain group attracted numerous mountaineers and explorers during the 19th century, leading to the establishment of multiple climbing routes and mountain refuges.
Visitors can access the mountain through San Martino di Castrozza, with optimal hiking conditions from late May through early October and skiing opportunities in winter.
The mountain features the Altopiano delle Pale, a vast plateau at 2,600 meters surrounded by peaks, creating an otherworldly landscape of bare limestone rock.
