Eretum, an ancient Sabine town in Latium
Eretum is an ancient Roman city near Montelibretti whose remains are scattered across the landscape today. The site contains stone walls, building foundations, and approximately 40 underground burial chambers carved with spaces for the deceased.
This city flourished over two thousand years ago and served as an important crossroads for traders and travelers in the ancient world. The underground burial chambers were used across several centuries, showing how burial customs and craftsmanship evolved over time.
The site is easy to reach from Montelibretti by car or on foot. The open landscape with fields and simple paths allows for relaxed exploration, especially if you enjoy quiet outdoor spaces and countryside views.
The most famous burial chamber, Tomb 11, held magnificent grave goods including a gold breastplate and a chariot before tomb robbers stole most items and sold them in Copenhagen. These objects were later returned to Italy and now sit in a museum in Fara in Sabina, revealing the wealth and status of some ancient residents.
