Abbey of Saint John in Argentella

The Abbey of Saint John in Argentella features Lombard architecture with three naves, an apse, and a bell tower built in the 12th century.

The abbey stands on foundations from a 2nd century BC Roman building and received protection from Count Ottaviano of Palombara, who returned vast properties in 1111.

The religious museum within the abbey displays artifacts and architectural elements from different periods, including Carolingian floor fragments and Roman remains.

The abbey, located on Strada San Giovanni in Argentella, offers parking facilities and received 400 visitors during its 2018 opening season.

The name Argentella derives from the silvery reflections of water that once flowed through the valley where the abbey stands.
