Riserva naturale Nomentum, Regional nature reserve in Fonte Nuova and Mentana, Italy.
Nomentum Regional Nature Reserve spans 827 hectares of hilly terrain filled with deciduous forests, olive groves, and cultivated fields situated above 200 meters in elevation. The landscape combines natural woodland areas with agricultural land, creating a mosaic of different habitats within a single protected zone.
The area has been inhabited since the Early Bronze Age around 2300 BC, as revealed by archaeological discoveries. The Romans later left their mark with structures and roads that shaped the region for centuries.
The name comes from the ancient Roman city of Nomentum that once stood in this area. Walking through the land today, you can sense how people lived here for thousands of years through what remains visible.
You can reach the reserve through the SS Salaria and SP Nomentana roads that pass through the area. Train connections from Roma Tiburtina station go to Mentana-Monterotondo, providing access to the protected zone.
The reserve sits where the Tiber Valley floodplain meets the Cornicolani Mountains, creating an ecological meeting point that preserves rare plant communities. This location allows visitors to see how nature transitions from lowland to highland environments in a single protected area.
