Monte Zappi

Monte Zappi is a limestone peak in the Monti Lucretili range that rises to approximately 1,276 meters. Clear views extend across surrounding valleys and toward the distant outline of Rome.

The Romans knew this peak as Lucretilis Mons and mentioned it in ancient texts from the time of poet Horace. Its role as a landmark stretches back to the classical period of ancient Rome.

The mountain held meaning for ancient Roman writers like Horace, who wrote about the views from nearby rural estates in the region. Visitors walking the slopes today can experience the same wide landscape that inspired classical poetry.

Hiking routes connect to the Rifugio Monte Gennaro shelter located roughly 500 meters west of the summit, offering a rest stop for walkers. Starting early allows time to reach the top and enjoy views while daylight holds.

When viewed from Rome's western approach, this is the highest peak visible on the horizon, making it a natural geographic marker. Few visitors realize this prominent role in the city's visual landscape.
