Castello Orsini di Nerola, Medieval castle in Nerola, Italy

Castello Orsini di Nerola is a medieval fortress sitting on a hilltop in the town of Nerola, in the province of Rome, built with four corner towers and thick defensive walls in a Romanesque-medieval style. It stands at the center of the old town and overlooks the surrounding valley.

The Orsini family took control of the site in 1235 and made it one of their key strongholds in Lazio, strengthening its walls and towers over time. The property changed hands several times across the following centuries before reaching its current state.

The castle now operates as a hotel, and its medieval rooms are furnished with period pieces that reflect how nobility once lived in this part of central Italy. Staying here gives a direct sense of the scale and daily rhythm of a noble household.

The castle sits on a hill in the old center of Nerola and is easiest to reach by car, as public transport connections are limited. Since the building works as a hotel and event venue, it is worth checking in advance whether a visit is possible on any given day.

In 1867, these walls sheltered Garibaldi's troops during their campaign against papal forces, just before the defeat at Mentana temporarily halted Italian unification. This stay connects the building directly to one of the most dramatic episodes in the country's modern history.
