Temple of Venus and Roma, Ancient Roman temple at the Forum Romanum, Italy
The temple extends between the Basilica of Maxentius and the Colosseum, featuring two symmetrical sanctuaries dedicated to Venus Felix and Roma Aeterna.
Emperor Hadrian initiated construction in 121 CE, and Antoninus Pius completed this largest temple of ancient Rome in 141 CE at the former site of Nero's palace.
The temple represented Roman architectural skill through its combination of marble columns, porphyry decorations, and geometric floor patterns in both sanctuaries.
Visitors access the temple through the Roman Forum entrance, with guided tours available from April through October between 8:30 AM and one hour before sunset.
The temple required twenty-four elephants to relocate the 35-meter bronze Colossus statue of Nero that previously occupied its construction site.
