Santa Maria della Pietà al Colosseo, Catholic church within the Colosseum, Rome, Italy
The Santa Maria della Pietà al Colosseo occupies a fornix of the Colosseum, featuring a 19th-century bas-relief of the Madonna on its main altar.
The church existed as a sacred aedicule during Pope Paul IV's papacy in 1555 before the Confraternity of Gonfalone acquired it in 1622.
The space initially served as a changing room for performers participating in the Passion of Christ representations inside the Colosseum arena.
The church holds mass services every Saturday and Sunday under the management of Circolo San Pietro, located at coordinates 41.8908N, 12.4925E.
A hermit monk lived and maintained this small church after its transformation from an aedicule to an oratory in the 17th century.
