Santa Maria della Pietà al Colosseo

Santa Maria della Pietà al Colosseo sits in a vaulted niche within the Colosseum and features an altar with a 19th-century relief of the Madonna. The church space is intimate and narrow, framed by thick ancient walls that carry the weight of nearly 2,000 years.

The chapel existed as a sacred shrine under Pope Paul IV in 1555. The Confraternity of Gonfalone took over the space in 1622 and transformed it over the following decades.

The space originally served actors performing Passion plays in the Colosseum arena as a place to prepare. This past use still shapes how people experience this corner as a spot for quiet reflection.

Mass services take place on Saturdays and Sundays under the care of the Circolo San Pietro. Access to the church requires entering through the Colosseum itself, so visiting times depend on the main monument's schedule.

A hermit monk lived within this small sanctuary after its conversion from a simple shrine to a proper chapel in the 17th century. His presence connected this hidden corner to a tradition of continuous devotion that lasted for generations.
