Refuge Frédéric Chabod, Mountain hut in Valsavarenche, Italy.
The Frédéric Chabod shelter sits at 2750 meters elevation at the base of Gran Paradiso's north-west face within the national park. It provides 85 beds and modern bathroom facilities for visitors.
The project started in 1966 through the Valsavarenche Guides Society and construction took place between 1978 and 1985. The opening marked an important milestone for developing access to this mountain region.
The shelter is a meeting place for climbers and hikers exploring the Gran Paradiso area. People from different places gather here to share experiences and prepare for mountain expeditions together.
The shelter opens in spring for ski mountaineering until mid-May and reopens from June to September. Visitors should remember that the high altitude means conditions there can be much colder and windier than at lower elevations.
The shelter earned UNI EN ISO 14001 certification in 2001, making it one of the first mountain sites to formally commit to environmental responsibility at that elevation. This award shows its dedication to sustainable operations in a fragile ecosystem.
