Santa Maria degli Angeli

Santa Maria degli Angeli is a village near Assisi and is dominated by the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which overlooks the entire settlement. Inside this large church stands the Porziunkula Chapel, a small stone sanctuary that is one of the most important sites in the Franciscan tradition.

The chapel dates back to the 10th century, but in the late 1100s it became associated with Saint Francis, who established his religious movement there and spent his final days in this area. A large basilica was built later to enclose and protect this humble structure.

The village is easily reached by local bus or car from Assisi, and comfortable walking shoes are advisable for exploring the area around the basilica. The site is flat and accessible, with clear pathways leading through the grounds and into the main church building.

The Porziunkula is actually a restored Romanesque chapel from the 10th century and one of the oldest structures in the region, making it a rare example of early medieval building technique. Its preservation inside this large modern basilica creates a striking contrast between humble simplicity and grand scale.
