Sanctuary of Rivotorto, Gothic Revival shrine and church in Rivotorto, Italy.
The Sanctuary of Rivotorto is a church building with a pink stone facade divided into three sections and decorated with ornate portals. Inside, mosaics illustrate scenes from Saint Francis's life and the early monastic community that formed here.
An original structure stood here from 1445 until an earthquake in 1853 destroyed it. The current building was then rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style.
The interior walls hold paintings from the 17th century that show scenes from the early Franciscan community and their life in this place. These artworks give visitors a visual connection to the spiritual activities that happened here centuries ago.
The sanctuary sits a few kilometers outside Assisi and is reachable by bus or walking from the train station. Visitors should allow time to explore the grounds and surroundings at a relaxed pace.
Beneath the modern structures of the sanctuary, a primitive stone hovel is preserved where Saint Francis wrote the first Rule of the Minorites. This modest relic offers visitors a direct connection to the very origins of the Franciscan movement.
