Palazzo dell'Orologio, Medieval palace in Piazza dei Cavalieri, Pisa, Italy
The Palazzo dell'Orologio is a Renaissance building in Piazza dei Cavalieri featuring a central arched gateway, a clock mechanism, and decorated wall surfaces. The structure sits among other palace buildings and connects underground to an adjacent palace complex.
The building was designed by Giorgio Vasari around 1554 as part of a Renaissance planning effort in Pisa. Within its walls sits an older medieval tower, the Torre della Muda, which has been part of the city's structures for centuries.
The palace displays Renaissance architecture with frescoed facades created by local artists working in Pisa during the 1500s. The building shows how the city's design evolved to blend older medieval elements with newer artistic styles.
The palace houses a library and is not fully open to visitors since it serves as an educational institution. The best view of the building comes from the plaza, where you can see the facades and clock clearly.
The building preserves the story of a tragic family: the tower inside was once the site of a terrible fate from the 13th century. This dark chapter was later immortalized by Dante in one of his famous literary works.
