Statue of Cosimo I

The Statue of Cosimo I is a marble work standing in the center of Piazza dei Cavalieri that depicts the first Grand Duke of Tuscany in formal dress and regalia. The sculpture commands the plaza with its upright posture and finely carved clothing details.

Pietro Francavilla created this sculpture in 1596 as part of redesigning Piazza dei Cavalieri into a center of Medici rule. The work formed one element of a broader effort to strengthen the family's presence in the city.
