Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri

The white marble facade of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri features architectural elements designed by Don Giovanni de Medici and Alessandro Pieroni, with a bell tower by Giovanni Fancelli.

Construction of the church began in April 1565 under Grand Duke Cosimo de Medici to serve the Order of Knights of Saint Stephen, replacing an older church from 1074.

The interior displays naval trophy banners captured during Mediterranean battles, along with six wooden panels depicting significant events of the Knights of Saint Stephen.

Visitors can access the church through guided walking tours of Pisa, with three historical organs adding musical interest to the religious structure.

The wooden ceiling, added in 1604, contains painted panels by notable artists including Allori and il Cigoli, documenting the military achievements of the order.
