Chemnitzer Hütte, Alpine mountain hut at 2420 meters in Sand in Taufers, Italy.
Chemnitzer Hütte is a mountain shelter located at 2,420 meters elevation on the Neves Pass in the Tauern range. The hut accommodates around 60 visitors and serves as a base for hikers and climbers passing through this high-altitude terrain.
The hut was founded in 1880 by the Tures section of DuÖAV and transferred to the Chemnitz section in 1894, which carried out renovation work. This transition marked a turning point in how the mountain facility was managed and developed.
The refuge received its current name after World War I, honoring Giovanni Porro, an Italian Alpine officer who died on Monte Nero in 1916.
The hut is open from June through October during the warmer months and can be reached via a roughly 1.5-hour hike from the Neves dam trailhead using marked paths. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for weather conditions typical of high-altitude terrain.
Since 2015, the hut has been managed by a joint commission that includes representatives from Bolzano province, CAI, and AVS working together. This collaborative approach demonstrates how mountain facilities in border regions can be jointly overseen by multiple organizations.
