Museo Nazionale Alinari della Fotografia, Photography museum in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Italy
The Museo Nazionale Alinari della Fotografia is a national photography museum in Florence, housed in the former Ospedale di San Paolo building beside the Santa Maria Novella church. The collection spans historical prints, cameras, and equipment covering the full arc of photography from its early years to the modern era.
The museum opened in 1985 at Palazzo Rucellai, making it one of the first Italian institutions devoted entirely to photography. It moved to its present building in 2006, taking over the legacy of the Alinari family studio, which had been active since the mid-19th century.
The photographs on display show Italy as it looked before the big changes of the 20th century, from city streets to rural landscapes and everyday faces. Walking through the galleries feels like browsing through a family album of an entire country.
The museum sits right on Piazza Santa Maria Novella and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. A visit pairs well with a walk around the surrounding neighborhood, where several other landmarks are within a short distance.
The Alinari brothers opened their photography studio in Florence in 1852, making it one of the oldest documented photography businesses in the world. Many of their images were sold across Europe as prints and postcards long before travel photography became common practice.
