Marino Marini Museum
Marino Marini Museum, Modern art museum in Florence, Italy
The Marino Marini Museum houses a significant collection of sculptures and paintings within the former San Pancrazio Church, using the high spaces and natural light to full effect. The works on view include bronze horses, portraits, and figures inspired by Etruscan forms, all displayed within this architectural setting.
The museum opened in 1988 after extensive renovations of the medieval San Pancrazio Church were completed by architects Lorenzo Papi and Bruno Sacchi. The transformation of this religious building created a new space dedicated to displaying modern artworks.
The works on display show how this artist drew inspiration from ancient forms and transformed them into modern sculptures that speak to contemporary audiences. Walking through the church, you notice how the artworks create a conversation between the sacred space and modern creative expression.
The museum is fully wheelchair accessible and offers specially designed routes for visitors with visual impairments, hearing loss, Alzheimer's, and autism spectrum conditions. Note that the tall spaces throughout the building make it easy to see the artworks while also requiring some physical effort to explore different areas.
Inside the building stands the Rucellai Sepulchre, adorned with 30 marble inlays featuring botanical and geometric patterns across its exterior walls. This ornate monument stands out for its intricate craftsmanship and creates an interesting contrast with the modern artworks surrounding it.
