La Sila, Mountain range in Calabria, Italy
La Sila is a mountain range extending across the provinces of Crotone, Cosenza and Catanzaro in Calabria, formed mainly of granite and gneiss rock. The highest summit, Botte Donato, reaches 1,928 meters (6,325 feet) and overlooks wide plateaus covered with dense forests.
The Romans called this region Silva because of its wide forests, which supplied crucial timber for shipbuilding across the Mediterranean over many centuries. During the Middle Ages, Norman rulers established numerous monasteries throughout these mountains.
The area is known for its ancient monasteries dating from Norman times that still draw pilgrims today. The monastery of Santa Maria della Matina shows the influence of this religious tradition on local culture.
The national park covers 74,000 hectares and extends through 21 communities, with hiking trails and winter sports facilities accessible at different elevations. Accommodation can be found in mountain towns such as Camigliatello, which welcome visitors in summer and winter alike.
Scientific measurements have shown that the area around Tirivolo near Zagarise has the most oxygen-rich air in Europe. This exceptional air quality draws visitors who want to benefit from the pure mountain atmosphere.
