Lago Cecita, Mountain reservoir in Province of Cosenza, Italy
Lago Cecita is a mountain reservoir in Cosenza Province that covers about 4 square kilometers within Sila National Park. The lake sits at roughly 1,100 meters elevation and mirrors the steep slopes of the surrounding Calabrian peaks.
The reservoir was built between 1947 and 1951 by damming the Mucone River. This project created an important water supply system that would serve the mountain communities for decades.
The lake sits between three municipalities and belongs to the daily rhythm of the mountain communities around it. Local farmers depend on its water for their work, and the landscape shapes how people in the region live.
The water supplies irrigation for potato cultivation and feeds a hydroelectric plant in the area. Visitors should plan for mountain weather and wear layers, as conditions change quickly at this elevation.
The water body stretches roughly 7 kilometers through rugged terrain, creating an unusually long shoreline for a mountain lake. This extended shape makes it stand out distinctly in the Sila landscape.
