Borgo medievale, Architectural ensemble in Parco del Valentino, Turin, Italy
Borgo Medievale is an architectural ensemble in Parco del Valentino featuring reconstructed medieval buildings from Piedmont and Aosta Valley. The complex includes streets, squares, fountains, fortifications, frescoes, residences, and artisan workshops recreating the layout and appearance of a medieval settlement.
Borgo Medievale opened in 1884 during the Italian General Exhibition as a reconstruction project guided by strict architectural principles. The buildings were recreated based on the study of authentic medieval structures from the Piedmont and Aosta Valley regions.
The central Rocca structure serves as a fortified noble residence, with rooms displaying how 15th-century aristocrats lived daily. The artisan workshops surrounding it show the trades and skills that kept the medieval community functioning.
The site is normally open during daytime hours, with artisan demonstrations and paper-making workshops available to visit. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds feature uneven paths and cobblestone surfaces.
The site includes medieval gardens added in 1998 that showcase plants from the period using historical cultivation methods. Maintenance follows organic practices without modern agricultural techniques.
