The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Torino covers 2.6 hectares beside the Po in the Parco del Valentino, at Viale Pier Andrea Mattioli. Its geometric beds, laid out in 1730–1731, hold about 2,000 species, with a further 300 in the alpine garden, 500 in the arboretum and 1,000 under glass. The tree-lined avenue keeps early 19th-century specimens of Liriodendron tulipifera, Tilia argentea and Ginkgo biloba.

Live plant collections began in 1560 at the Studio di Mondovì, moving to Turin in 1566. The present garden was founded in 1713 by Victor Amadeus II as the Orto Regio, and in 1729 it became part of the university with G.B. Caccia as professor and prefect. Caccia laid out geometric beds in 1730–1731 and planted about 800 species; by 1762, under Vitaliano Donati, some 1,200 species were cultivated.

The garden's name comes from the Orto Regio founded by Victor Amadeus II; its botanical chair passed to Giuseppe Bartolomeo Caccia in 1729. A path with braille panels lets blind and visually impaired visitors touch and smell labelled specimens. The Iconographia Taurinensis, begun under Vitaliano Donati in 1752, gathered 7,470 watercolour plates in 64 volumes, painted until 1868.

The garden lies in the Parco del Valentino on the left bank of the Po, at Viale Pier Andrea Mattioli, and opens on weekends and holidays during the warmer months for a fee. A path with braille panels beside touchable living specimens is laid out for blind and visually impaired visitors. The alpine garden, arboretum and greenhouses sit in separate zones, so plan the visit by section.

A special area here focuses on plants from southern Africa, a collection many visitors overlook. This specialized section displays species adapted to dry conditions and stands out distinctly from the damper areas.
