Camp Darby, Military base in Pisa, Italy.
Camp Darby is a United States Army installation located between Pisa and Livorno that provides logistics support for military operations across Europe. The base contains a welcome center, personnel offices, legal services, and medical facilities serving active-duty staff and their families.
The base was named in 1952 to honor Brigadier General William O. Darby, who was killed by artillery fire while commanding the 10th Mountain Division in 1945. In 2020, the northern section transferred to Italian control and now houses the Italian Army Special Forces Command.
The main square honors Masato Nakae, a Japanese-American soldier recognized for his bravery during World War II near Pisa. This memorial space keeps alive the memory of service members who fought far from home.
The base is reachable by tram or bus from Pisa; be ready for security checks at the entrance. Visitors should expect that certain areas may be restricted and that access hours can vary depending on military operations.
The installation was originally established after World War II and later became a key logistics hub for NATO operations. Today it remains a training and multinational cooperation center that most tourists pass by without noticing.
