Dune di Tirrenia, Nature reserve on the Mediterranean coast in Tirrenia, Italy.
Dune di Tirrenia is a nature reserve on the Mediterranean coast spanning 24 hectares with coastal dunes rising several meters high. Mediterranean vegetation including maritime pines and shrubs grows across these dunes close to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The reserve was founded in 1997 by WWF Tuscany through a partnership with Pisa Municipality, Migliarino Natural Park, and Pisa Province. This collaboration made it possible to protect this valuable coastal area.
Educational panels throughout the reserve explain the local plants, animals, and how the coastal dune ecosystem works for visitors. They help people understand why this environment matters and what lives here.
Guided walks are offered from May to September and last about 90 minutes through the reserve. Special paths are available for visitors with reduced mobility.
The reserve is home to one of Italy's few remaining populations of Greek silk vine, a rare plant growing among maritime pines and strawberry trees. This species is hardly found elsewhere in the country and makes this location botanically important.
