Torre del Magnale

Torre del Magnale is an octagonal stone tower that once stood at the entrance of the former Porto Pisano, featuring multiple floors and an observation platform at its summit. Today only foundation ruins remain visible along the Calata del Magnale quay within the modern industrial port.

The tower was built between 1154 and 1163 and served as a crucial defense point and headquarters for the supreme commander of Porto Pisano. Over time it underwent multiple reconstructions, transforming from squared stones to reinforced bricks in its later structure.

The name refers to the tower's size and reflects how important it was for controlling the harbor during Pisa's maritime period. Visitors walking along the quay can sense the medieval connection to seafaring that once defined this coast.

The site is located within Livorno's modern industrial port zone and can be accessed from the Calata del Magnale quay. Since only foundation remains are visible, wear sturdy footwear and be mindful of ongoing port activities in the area.

The tower was highly visible from ships approaching the harbor and served as a landmark for seafarers navigating the Tuscan coast. Its strategic position made it one of the first structures maritime travelers would recognize when arriving at port.
