Cimitero Greco-Ortodosso, Greek Orthodox cemetery in Livorno, Italy.
The Greek Orthodox Cemetery is a historic burial ground in Livorno with a rectangular layout and marble monuments throughout. A chapel with a 19th-century iconostasis stands on the grounds, along with a caretaker's residence.
The site was established in 1778 to replace an earlier burial ground from 1773 that had become inadequate. The older location closed in 1840 as the city expanded and required the land for development.
The inscriptions on graves mix Greek and Italian names, revealing how families built a lasting community here. You can see how they maintained their faith and language across generations in this burial ground.
The site is open to visitors on specific days in the morning with entry through Via Marco Mastacchi. It is best to plan your visit ahead since hours are limited and access may require advance notice for larger groups.
The small chapel on the grounds became the main worship place for Livorno's Greek Orthodox community after the Holy Trinity Church was demolished in 1942. This transformation turned a modest burial chapel into the spiritual center for the local faithful.
