Fosso Reale

Fosso Reale is a historic canal that surrounds the city center of Livorno in a pentagonal shape. It connects two major fortresses through waterways and defines the structure of the harbor district.

The canal's construction began in 1577 under Medici rule to protect the city and enhance its harbor. After decades of work, the project reached its final form in 1609.
