Castello del Catajo

Castello del Catajo is a large castle near Battaglia Terme with hundreds of rooms spread across multiple levels, furnished with ornate frescoes and grand halls. The interior spaces feature richly decorated corridors and furnished chambers that reflect the generous lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

The castle was built in 1573 by Marquess Pio Enea I degli Obizzi as a seat for his family's wealth and power. Over the centuries, ownership passed between Venetian noble families and the Habsburg imperial dynasty, reflecting the region's shifting political landscape.

The interior walls display elaborate frescoes with battle scenes painted by Giambattista Zelotti, showing Roman events and military accomplishments of the Obizzi family. These painted scenes tell the story of the noble family's ambitions and the wealth they accumulated.

Access is through guided tours that lead visitors through furnished rooms and decorated corridors, with educational programs available for school groups. Plan enough time to explore the extensive interior spaces and appreciate the detail in the wall paintings.

A special horse staircase climbs to the main floor, where a large painted family tree of the Obizzi dynasty covers an entire wall. This genealogical display emphasizes the family's long lineage and their prominence in the region.
