Villa of the Papyri, Roman villa in Ercolano, Italy
The Villa of the Papyri extends 250 meters along the Gulf of Naples, featuring multiple peristyle gardens, columned porticoes, and swimming areas within its grounds.
The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD buried the villa under 30 meters of ash, preserving its structures and contents for archaeological discovery in 1750.
The villa contains an extensive library of 1,800 papyrus scrolls, representing the only complete surviving collection of texts from the ancient Roman period.
Visitors can access the archaeological remains through the Herculaneum archaeological park, which maintains regulated pathways through the excavated sections.
The collection of bronze and marble sculptures found at the villa represents the largest group of classical statuary ever discovered in a single location.
